About Us

Welcome to the LLU Blog

The Language Learning Unit (LLU) is the most visible face of internationalisation at Keele University.
Language is inseparable from communication. Sadly, not many of us now learn a language in order to decipher ancient texts. In academic life it is all too easy to overlook how we can apply and practice what we learn outside the university. Academic success is clearly important, but by communicating to others what we have learned, not only in the classroom but through sharing our own experiences in “the real world”, we can also be the voice of internationalisation and even experience a sense of enjoyment in the process.

So, whether you are brushing up on your English for academic study, studying for a qualification to teach English, learning a modern foreign language or just interested in language and communication, we hope that this Blog will provide interesting posts and food for thought.

Pre-sessional Academic English Summer School Celebrates 100% Pass Rate

On Friday 18th September the Language Learning Unit hosted an end-of-course Poster Presentation and Award Ceremony to celebrate the success of the 91 students who participated in this year’s Pre-Sessional Academic English Summer Course.

The session opened in the Chancellor’s Building Gallery with a welcome by Martina Wallner, Head of the LLU, and a congratulatory speech to the students by Professor David Shepherd, Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The event was well attended by staff from across the Keele Community, many of whom had generously given their time over the past 12 weeks taking part in the live lecture series, or providing pastoral support.

The students’ enthusiasm and commitment to their projects was evident from the high quality of the work produced and several lecturers commented on the profound improvement in the students’ level of communication when presenting and discussing their projects.

Having a achieved a 100% pass rate, the cohort received their Certificates of Completion in a short award ceremony led by Pre-sessional Course Director Jody Harlowe, and students and staff enjoyed a luncheon to bring the event to a close.
