About Us

Welcome to the LLU Blog

The Language Learning Unit (LLU) is the most visible face of internationalisation at Keele University.
Language is inseparable from communication. Sadly, not many of us now learn a language in order to decipher ancient texts. In academic life it is all too easy to overlook how we can apply and practice what we learn outside the university. Academic success is clearly important, but by communicating to others what we have learned, not only in the classroom but through sharing our own experiences in “the real world”, we can also be the voice of internationalisation and even experience a sense of enjoyment in the process.

So, whether you are brushing up on your English for academic study, studying for a qualification to teach English, learning a modern foreign language or just interested in language and communication, we hope that this Blog will provide interesting posts and food for thought.

Gunma-Keele Partnership Sealed with First Cohort

Seven students from Gunma University in Japan this week completed an exciting 4-week ‘English Language, Industry and Culture’ programme jointly organised by the Global Education team and the Language Learning Unit (LLU).   The programme, based on the highly successful format Keele has operated with the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies for a quarter century, includes a series of English classes through the LLU, lectures and tours by Keele staff, visits to local and nearby places of interest and a mixture of homestay with Keele and local families and a taste of the ‘student experience’ on campus in student accommodation, including activities with Keele’s Pre-sessional students.  Additional to the programme was the inclusion of ‘Industry Days’, during which the students were placed with local firms to get first-hand experience of work environments related to their future careers—a number of them with Keele staff.    The programme concluded with Poster Presentations based on the students’ Industry Day experiences and a departure dinner and certification ceremony in Keele Hall.

A blog recording some of the students’ experiences and impressions is at http://gunma-keele.blogspot.co.uk/ -- see if you can spot the Jeremy Brett look-alike!
